I THINK MY JAW DROPPED open. Certainly, it wasnât functioning properly for me to say anything else after that shocking exclamation. I was supposed to be a Halfling. My original glamour was human, but when I pulled it off, I was a Dark Elf Halfling.
How could my fathers claim anything different now?
I stared at them. Taerin smirked at my reaction, the jerk. Unlike Goiaerâs smirk with his scar making it scary, Taerinâs lips twisted into dark amusement at my naivety and it made me an angry kind of embarrassed.
He thought he had one up on me.
âOf course, youâre not human, Eve,â Goiaer said with a beleaguered sigh. I guess heâd had enough of my bombardment of questions that he thought I should already know the answer to at my age. What could I say? My education had been lacking.
âIâm human,â I stubbornly said. âOr a Halfling at least,â I added, backtracking my foolish statement when all evidence was to the contrary.
Taerin chuckled.
âAll Dark Elves have a little human in us from our origins, but you donât contain enough to claim true Halfling status. Didnât your mother tell you anything before you came to Faerie?â
âMy mother is human, fully human,â I retorted. âShe doesnât know anything about Faerie, except whatever that sadistic fuck Selvyth told her after he kidnapped her and terrorized my human family and friends. I bet he didnât have anything nice to say about you.â
âHow can your mother be fully human if youâre a purebred?â Goiaer pointed out, reasonably.
I glared at him. âYouâre lying.â
âWe prefer not to lie, Eve. Most Dark Elves can lie, unlike other purebred Fae. Even the barest sliver of human is enough, it seems, to give us that ability as well as iron immunity. Surely you know this about other Fae if youâve spent any length of time here. Why do you think most Fae are so fond of bargains? When you canât lie, there has to be other ways to ensure you get what you want.â
I turned my gaze to Taerin. âExplain why there is any human in purebred Dark Elves. That doesnât make sense. None of this makes sense. You say you donât lie, but Iâve been lied to my whole life!â I said, shouting it.
âYou are pushing the boundaries of what knowledge we should give you outside of a bargain, Eve,â Goiaer said. âIâll consider this general knowledge that any child of Faerie should know and therefore free. Dark Fae and Light Fae bred to make the first Dark Elves. It was only possible through magic and Halflings, the human part of the first pairings permitting mixing that normally is forbidden between the magics. Even now, most Dark Elves carry only one type of magic, although their blood is traced with the other magic as a marker of their heritage, much as the humanity that hasnât left our ancestry completely.â
âThe first Dark Elves came from outcasts like Halflings. Through strong wills and soul magic, your ancestors created a new type of Fae without the biases of the Light and Dark kingdoms,â Taerin said.
